Eluethera: Rock Sound and a Glass Window

Casstaway and buddy boat Holokai, arrive at Rock Sound, Eluethra on Wednesday, May 4 after a windy/squall day of sailing with a reefed Genny. On Thursday, May 5, we venture ashore to explore, grab some groceries at The Marketplace fill diesel cans, and enjoy lunch at Sammy’s.

Tanya ordered the vegetable salad. Yummy, but more like a cross between fresh salsa and gazpacho!
Todd’s conch burger and fries.

On Thursday Todd runs the watermaker. Our friends on Karma are also anchored at Rock Sound with their buddy boaters so we join them at The Wild Orchid late that afternoon for happy hour, live music, and dinner. Wild Orchid is lovely and also provides free RO water and trash drop off. Happy hour (small $5 specialty  drinks) is from 4 to 5pm.

With schizophrenic winds that are either too much, too little, or wrong direction, our stay continues through Wednesday, May 11. But Dave hosts steak night on Holokai and several rounds of our new favorite card game, Wizard. We enjoy take away lunch twice from Big Fish & Chips, where Chef Ingrid is a sweetie with a good sense of humor. And we do three weeks worth of laundry at T’s, whew!

Todd and Dave waiting for Ingrid to finish cooking our fresh lunch. Awesome grouper, fresh salad, and plantains. With fish out of supply our second visit, Todd opts for conch and Tanya enjoys the baked chicken.

Todd, Tanya and David rent a car on Saturday, May 7 and drive the island North to the Glass Window Bridge. Our road trip includes a visit to Rock Sound’s famous Ocean Hole, lunch at Delish Lifestyle in Hatchet Bay, fresh veggies at Island Farms in South Palmetto Point, and shirt and jewelry shopping at Island Made Gifts in Gregory Town.

The Ocean Hole at Rock Sound. Rumored to have healing powers, it is a favorite swimming spot. There is a pretty park and gazebo, and for those who prefer not to dive or climb, a nice ladder for getting in and out of the water.

Tanya enjoys the Delish Green Ice. Todd has his usual Kalik, Bahamian beer.

Captain Todd at the Glass Window Bridge

The Glass Window claims to be the narrowest place on earth – the naturally-formed bridge of rock was destroyed by a hurricane and it has been replaced by a man-made bridge. You can stand on the bridge and see Exuma Sound on one side and the Atlantic on the other.
