The cheapest part of owning a boat is the day you purchase it… then it starts to get expensive.

In their book, Two Can Sail (2015), Captains Jean Levine and Jeff Grossman advise that when buying a brand new sailboat you should plan on spending an extra 25 to 30 percent of the purchase price on additional equipment and upgrades (i.e., the boat ain’t gonna come with every option you need or want). That was certainly the case with Casstaway. While she is a beauty, with all manner of high tech systems and electronics, there are still a few important items she lacks based upon our cruising necessities list (we’ll talk wish list in a future post). So, we have begun the process of watching the dollars sail right out the door as the additional systems are purchased and installed. This past week it’s been radar and AIS. Consequently, having just cleaned up the huge mess from the repair of our AC unit (see prior post), we’ve once again been putting our salon back together after having the new wiring run for these two babies. Yay, new toys for Todd to play with (and me to struggle through learning)!
Next up? Solar panels and a wind generator…
Our radar is the UFO-looking thing attached mid-mast. If you squint you may also note my cute double wine glass flag hanging just below. |
