Champagne, a Rose and a Hog

At 0-dark-30 on Saturday, March 26, we three ships depart Bimini Cove Marina for our first Bahamas anchorage – Frazer’s Hog Cay. A very long day of motor sailing with chillier breezes – Tanya pulls out a sweatshirt and her foul weather jacket for the journey. We arrive at Frazer’s pooped but happy to set anchor by 6:00pm. We plan to stay at Frazer’s for two nights in order to wait out tomorrow’s weather before heading to our next stop at Rose Island.

Sunday, March 27 we take advantage of the day to make water and do a few boat chores. We reward ourselves with steak night on EWWE2. Eric is the grill-master extraordinaire, Tanya makes green bean casserole, Wendy prepares her delicious roasted beets, and David makes mashed potatoes. Todd breaks out the champagne!

Champagne and steak on EWWE2 to celebrate

On Monday morning, March 28, we depart Frazer’s Hog Cay around 7:30am. We’re headed to Rose Island, a new anchorage for Casstaway (all anchorages are new for our buddy boaters, who have made their first Bahamas crossings). Rose Island is a beautiful spot, with lovely beaches and an internal passageway that makes for a nice dinghy exploration. But a longer stay will have to wait until our return trip as we are eager to make our way to Highborne Cay tomorrow to tuck-in and wait out the next weather front.

Scenes from Rose Island

Eric had earlier made radio friends with a monohull that seems to be on the same trek as us. So, he invites the crew of Dawn Treader, Mark and Brooke Berenson (who are also first-time Bahamas cruisers), to join our small armada. As we set out for Highborne Cay on Tuesday, March 29, we are now four ships at sail. Only, we don’t sail, as wind is light and on our nose.

We reach Highborne Cay around 1:30pm and decide to anchor on the north side of the Cay, where we will have more protection from the expected winds over the next few days. We are joined by a number of other vessels looking to do the same. A beautiful spot to spend some time swimming, sunning, reading, snorkeling, and another go with the water maker. We anticipate staying at Highborne through Friday, April 1.

Cuddling on Casstaway

What better place to enjoy a good book?!
$5.89 a gallon for gas doesn’t seem quite so bad when eggs are $8.50 a dozen and a stalk of celery is $7.20!
Snorkel time! Wilson (Casstaway’s dinghy) is the last one in this chain. If you look closely, you’ll see the new dinghy ladder that Todd gifted Tanya to make getting back into the dinghy SO much easier.
